Bookings instead of cancellations - when does the recession end?

When will a spark of normality return to our everyday life? This is probably the question we all ask ourselves as we sit in our home office, follow the news and experience the tourist world as it has never been before. We at easybooking believe that things will soon be on the rise again and for this reason we not only follow the news but also the development of the enquiries and bookings that we receive for our accommodations.

You can follow the development on this site live as well, checking on daily updated stats. The booking monitor as an example displays the interest, the requests, the bookings and the cancellations in real-time. This way it visualizes the booking developments in the DACH area. We at easybooking are currently happy about every booking that one of our hosts receives.

The booking monitor

Since all incoming requests and bookings are recorded by easybooking, the Booking Monitor shows 100% of the bookings and cancellations, regardless of whether they were entered or removed directly or manually by the reception via a regional website or a booking portal. The data generated in this way can be accessed by our partners using a specially developed statistics tool.

The number of requests

The first sign of improvement in the tourism industry is the interest in holidays, measurable by the incoming requests that guests send to our accommodation providers. This graph automatically displays, on a daily basis, how the number of enquiries has changed compared to the previous year. This is an ideal indication to be able to recognise early on whether and to what extent interest in holidays is returning. If we look at the current low point, this means 93% fewer enquiries than on the same weekday last year.

The booking sources

Up-to-date we register the source of the booking and whether our hosts are able to convince the guests to book directly. In addition to the share of bookings via OTAs, the proportion of bookings via the destination website is also displayed. The value of direct bookings consists of all sources that are generated directly including bookings made by phone or e-mail. Currently, the proportion of bookings via the booking portals is increasing again.

Will there be a summer tourism?

A relevant question that many tourism managers are asking themselves is for which time period the inquiries and bookings are currently coming in, even if they are just a few. Are tourists still interested in travelling in summer? This question is answered in this graph concerning the bookings and requests of the last 7 days.

Booking behavior

Obviously there has been a downward trend line since February 10th. Since then, the number of bookings, regardless of the booking source, has been negative compared to the previous year and reached a low point at the end of March with up to 91% fewer incoming bookings. Also the number of inquiries show the same downwoard trend.

Cancellations are higher than ever

At the same time, holiday cancellations have been increasing since 24 February and on 13 March the cancellation rate was up to 944% higher than in the year before. As the easybooking operations are mainly located in the holiday tourism sector in the DACH region, this development shows that accommodation outside the crisis areas is also affected economically. The desire to travel is lower than ever.

Millions of losses due to cancelled bookings

That chart shows the lost turnover of Tyrolean property owners due to incoming cancellations and missing bookings compared to the previous year. Easybooking calculated the total loss for the Tyrolean accommodation market. Currently the estimated loss in terms of missing bookings and cancellations is 40.6 million euros for Tyrol, 12.5 million euros of which are just for the 12th of March 2020.

Accommodation providers have to close

In addition to the current cancellations hosts will have to close their business and guests need to travel back. In Tyrol, Salzburg and Vorarlberg, the hosts are obliged to close their guest houses and cancel upright bookings. For the Tyrolean accommodation market, therefore, the value of the remaining bookings from 13 March to 30 April were considered. The value of these bookings which are now not arriving amounts to 165 million € for the total tyrolian market. The calculation is based on the current market share of easybooking in relation of the overnight stays in tyrol.

This page is updated daily at 10:00 CET to monitor booking behaviors in the DACH region. The data is based on a comparison of a customer group already active in the previous year with an average of 1 million overnight stays per month. These small to medium-sized establishments with an average of less than 10 units from the holiday regions in the D-A-CH area (mainly Austria) are characteristic of the survey.
